This tour invites you to a deep immersion into the Mayan culture, including sacred cenote swims, Mayan sites, local towns, big cities-both ancient and modern-, and haciendas. Be prepared for some serious Mayan site visiting; we will not omit the most visited ones, like Chichen Itza and Tulum, but we will also cover some of the less visited, but equally striking ones, such as Becan and Kohunlich.
Arrival into Cancun, where you will be met and transferred south to Tulum. Settle into your hotel and take time to unwind after your journey. Depending on arrival time, enjoy a first walk along the beach or a relaxed evening in one of the area’s atmospheric restaurants. The Caribbean setting provides a gentle introduction to the journey ahead.
Begin with a guided visit to Tulum, dramatically positioned above the Caribbean Sea and one of the most scenic Maya sites in the region. Continue inland to Cobá, where ancient structures lie scattered through the jungle landscape. Those who wish may explore parts of the site by bicycle for a more active experience. Return to Tulum with time at leisure.
Travel south through the Yucatán Peninsula to Bacalar, a relaxed lakeside town known for its striking lagoon. Enjoy a boat experience across the “Lagoon of Seven Colors,” where shifting tones of blue define the landscape. Time permitting, swim or simply take in the peaceful surroundings. The pace today is calm and restorative.
Continue deeper into the Maya world with visits to lesser-known sites such as Kohunlich and Chicanná. Surrounded by forest and visited by far fewer travelers, these ruins offer a more intimate archaeological experience. Later, settle into your lodge in the jungle, where the natural setting becomes part of the journey itself. The atmosphere is remote, quiet, and immersive.
Travel toward Chiapas, stopping en route at Becán, an impressive site once protected by defensive walls and moats. Explore its temples and structures with insight into its strategic importance in the ancient Maya world. Continue onward through changing landscapes toward Palenque. The route marks a transition into a greener, more tropical environment.
Visit Palenque, one of the most elegant and atmospheric Maya cities, set against a backdrop of dense jungle. Its refined carvings and architectural harmony make it one of the region’s highlights. Later, continue to nearby rivers or waterfalls, where clear waters offer a refreshing contrast to the morning’s exploration. The day balances history with nature beautifully.
Set out for one of the most memorable excursions of the journey, traveling by boat along the Usumacinta River to reach Yaxchilán. Hidden deep within the jungle, the site feels remote and evocative, with howler monkeys often heard overhead. The river approach adds a true sense of discovery. Few archaeological visits in the region feel quite as dramatic.
Continue toward the Gulf Coast, where the landscape opens into wetlands, lagoons, and coastal ecosystems. Enjoy a boat ride through the waters around Isla Aguada, with opportunities to spot dolphins and birdlife depending on conditions. The day introduces a softer, maritime side of the journey. It is a welcome shift after several days of inland exploration.
Visit Edzná, an impressive and often quieter Maya site known for its ceremonial platforms and broad plazas. Continue to Campeche, a historic walled city overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. Upon arrival, explore its pastel-colored streets, fortifications, and relaxed coastal atmosphere. The contrast between archaeology and colonial heritage defines the day.
Travel north into Yucatán state to visit Uxmal, widely regarded as one of the most architecturally refined Maya cities. Its elegant proportions, decorative façades, and distinctive Puuc style set it apart from other sites. After time to explore, continue onward through the countryside. The day offers a deeper appreciation of Maya artistic sophistication.
Arrive in Mérida, the cultural capital of the Yucatán, and enjoy a guided introduction to its elegant avenues, plazas, and colonial architecture. Later, continue to Izamal, known for its distinctive golden-yellow streetscape and quiet charm. The town blends convent architecture with Maya foundations. Return with time to enjoy the evening atmosphere.
Travel to Río Lagartos for a boat excursion through mangroves and protected wetlands rich in birdlife. Flamingos are often seen here seasonally, alongside a variety of coastal species. Continue inland to Valladolid, one of the peninsula’s most pleasant colonial towns. The day combines nature with a relaxed urban finish.
Visit Chichen Itza early, before the day’s busiest hours, allowing for a more considered experience of this iconic site. Explore its monumental structures and gain context into its historical significance. Later, cool off with a swim in a nearby cenote before continuing to Cancun. The journey concludes with two of the Yucatán’s defining experiences.
